In our recent restaurant travels we have been able to experience a wide variety of tastes, some we liked and some we didn’t, and below you’ll see who we liked (we rarely write anything about food that’s negative since everyone’s tastes are different so if we think a place isn’t good we just don’t waste space in the magazine. We’d rather cover someplace that we think you’d be interested in going to).
That said, here are some of the places that caught our fancy lately, starting with a pizza and sandwich place that delivers as well as serves on-premise and that is Hungry Howie’s, which is located at 5 Utility Dr. We most like the thinness of their pizza crust since we don’t like thick, chewy dough. Also, the toppings are good — we especially like the cheddar cheeseburger pizza, although others are good too. Their flavored crusts are also tasty, including garlic and herb and also Cajun. Pizza prices are good and the sandwiches are priced right too. You can call them at 386-446-4461 for pickup orders or delivery in Palm Coast.
And by the way, you’ll see an ad for Howie’s in this issue but that’s not why we wrote this. We don’t do that, number one (pay to play), and number two, we ate their food and liked it before Palm Coast magazine was even being considered being published so we asked them to advertise because of the food. And they said yes, thankfully, which helped out the publisher’s bank account somewhat.
Our next place is a barbecue joint in the heart of town and that’s Sonny’s Barbecue at 25 Cypress Edge Dr. We usually get some redneck egg rolls to start things off and then get some barbecue. We’ve had brisket and ribs and pork three ways among other items and some day we’ll have to try some of the sandwiches offered here too since everything else we’ve eaten here has been quite good. Next on the hit parade is the La Creperie Kafe, located at 9 Harbor Center Dr. This small, cozy place is great for breakfast, brunch or really any time you’re hungry. We enjoyed the food — both sweet and savory crepes — the friendly atmosphere and the service. Prices are very reasonable and portions are good. We also found out that the owners are originally from Quebec and that is the source of their French heritage. You can call at 386-222-5322 for pickup or reservations.
Flagler Beach was the scene of our next eating experience as we checked out Tortugas Florida Kitchen & Bar at 608 S. Ocean Blvd one Friday afternoon. We sat in the upper deck where we enjoyed the view and a nice breeze off the water. A couple of strawberry margaritas (strong) started us off, leading to some conch fritters which quite honestly we weren’t crazy about.
It had more to do with the fact that this was our first time eating conch and maybe we just don’t like the taste. We did, however, like the coconut cream mussels which had a bit of spice and a touch of sweetness from the coconut. Yum, yum. We’ll be back.
