Summer Camp Youth Name Mascot for 17th Annual Intracoastal Waterway Cleanup

Each year, the Intracoastal Waterway Cleanup is a major pillar of Palm Coast’s ‘Keep PC Clean’ initiative to help keep the city litter and debris-free, especially around troublesome spots near waterways, parks, recreation areas, and neighborhoods. Pollution can have a devastating impact on stormwater systems and local wildlife. Last year, 188 participants collected over 1,800 pounds of trash during the event.

Nearly 140 campers entered their ideas for naming the mascot of this year’s event, a Florida Softshell Turtle. After narrowing down the list, it was determined that ‘Pearl’ would be the chosen name.

“Encouraging the campers to get involved with this process each year is something that will hopefully help bring awareness to the importance of conservation, and instill good habits that prevent them from littering,” said Palm Coast Mayor David Alfin. “We are so fortunate to have a great team that helps with clean-up efforts year-round, and residents who are willing to help at our seasonal events year after year, along with sponsors who help make these events possible.”

This year, the Florida Inland Navigation District (FIND) contributed a $5,000 grant to the event and has contributed a collective $85,000 since the inaugural Intracoastal Waterway Cleanup event in 2008.

“We are proud to contribute to the Intracoastal Waterway Cleanup and offer our unwavering support for conservation efforts here in the City of Palm Coast,” said Flagler County FIND Commissioner Randy Stapleford. “The growth that this event achieves each year is indicative of the tremendous importance of conservation and is a testament to how the community can come together to make a big difference in those efforts.”

Registration is now open for the event, which will take place on Saturday, September 21 at 8 a.m. at the Palm Coast Community Center. Participants may choose an area along the Intracoastal or anywhere within city limits for their collection efforts. Gloves, trash bags, a safety sheet, and a commemorative event t-shirt will be provided. A post-event community luncheon and awards ceremony will be held at the Community Center at 12 p.m. To learn more, or register, visit the registration link.
